A house that is safe for younger people can be a death trap for the elderly. Elderly people have more of a tendency to slip and trip as they get older. It only takes one fall to put them into assisted living or even death. If your mom is living alone, make sure her house is safe for her. There are several measures you can take.
Avoiding Disaster in the Kitchen
If your mom falls, the device will detect her fall. After a short period of inactivity it will notify you and/orr 911 to get help. Different devices have different features, so make sure you know what you are getting before you buy
If you get one with built-in GPS you will know where she is if she is away from home when she falls.
Ideally she should be living in a single story house without a basement. If she is living in a 2 story house, everything she needs should be on the first floor, including the laundry. Stairs can be particularly dangerous for the elderly.
Many falls take place in the bathroom, It is particularly dangerous because of the hard surfaces that can cause injury, and water in the shower can cause a person to slip. My grandfather died after he fell in the bathroom of their home. The shower or bathtub should be the walk-in variety to prevent falls. It should be equipped with sturdy grab bars on the wall. It's easy for a senior to lose their balance in the shower. The shower floor needs non-slip mat to prevent sliding and falling.
Many seniors fall by tripping on throw rugs. Cords and clutter on the floor are other hazards. Make sure there is nothing on the floor that can cause a fall.
There are many ways to open the door with a smart lock. This is especially important if she falls and can't get up. If her phone is handy, she can call 911. She can give the smart lock combination to the 911 operater, who in turn can give it to the emergency crew. That way they can get in to help her without breaking the door down. There are several ways a person can unlock the door from the outside with many smart locks. The include:
A physical key, just like any other lock
A registered fingerprint
By entering a combination on the keypad
Using the cell phone app
With a smart lock, a senior can unlock the door from the inside with Alexa or an app on their phone.
With a smart doorbell, your mom will be able to see who is coming and going with an app on her phone. On many smart doorbells she will be able to talk with the person at the door without going to the door.
Many smart doorbells, including Ring, require you to pay a monthly subscription fee to use them. We have found some that don't require the subscription. The doorbell pictured here can be used without a description, but it has the option for cloud storage of the video record with an optional subscription.
Make sure your mom knows that she should always stay in the kitchen when she is cooking or even boiling water. Elderly people can forget they have something on the stove if they walk into another room. That could cause a fire.
Call or text her every day just to check on her. It would be heartbreaking to find out she had been dead for 2 or 3 days in her house when you come to visit. Video calls are best. You can make free video calls with Google Messenger, or if you both have iPhones, with Facetime. Facebook Messenger is a free app for both Android and iPhones. It is very easy to use, and it works very well.
